A Nobel Fight

Skeptics deny that Gore won Peace Prize

Published on October 18, 2007

Even in the wake of overwhelming evidence that Al Gore was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, a surprisingly vocal minority is insisting that Gore actually may not have won.

“I just don’t think all the evidence is in yet about that, to be honest with you,” says Buzz Throckmorton, one of a group of self-identified “Gore Nobel deniers.” “I know The New York Times and CNN said that he won, but I just don’t trust them to get the story right.”

Last week, it was reported that Gore would share the award with the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, for their “efforts to build up and disseminate knowledge about man-made climate change,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

But the deniers aren’t buying it. “Who is this ‘Nobel Committee’ who supposedly decided this?” says Throckmorton. “We let Norwegians decide something like this? That doesn’t seem right. And I’ve never been to Norway, but I know that in Murfreesboro, where I live, rumors start getting around and before long it’s hard to tell what the facts are. That’s what happened with that whole story about my wife and that truck driver. What I’m saying is, this could have started with somebody’s opinion that Gore should win the Nobel Prize, and the next thing you know, some liberal from the media is reporting that as fact.”

Another denier, Patty Danforth, says she isn’t saying that Gore didn’t win, she just thinks more time needs to pass before anybody will know for sure.

“It’s just prudent to wait until more evidence is in,” she says. “We need to check and double-check the credentials to make sure the Nobel Committee had the right to give the award, including an examination of Alfred Nobel’s original will to ascertain his intent, then send the award itself out for authentication and metallurgical analysis. I’m not trying to slow-walk this, I just want to be sure of the facts.

“And,” she adds, “if [Gore’s win] turns out to be true, we’ll be the first to make fun of him for taking a jet over there to attend the ceremonies. So he either lost or he’s a hypocrite. We’ve got him right where we want him.”
