Local radio talk show host Steve Gill was excited to be asked to take over the national show hosted by G. Gordon Liddy for two weeks while Liddy is on vacation. In fact, Gill was so eager to get into Liddy’s mind-set that he prepared by duplicating one of Liddy’s most infamous stunts—eating a rat.

In his autobiography Will, Liddy recounted how as a boy he admired how his cat would catch and eat rodents. Inspired by the cat’s example, boy G. Gordon killed, cooked and ate a rat.

Liddy, who is a convicted felon for his role in the Watergate burglary that doomed the administration of Richard Nixon, has become a popular radio host and conservative spokesman—sort of a less popular Rush Limbaugh, or maybe a national version of Gill, only with jail time.

“The first thing I did when I learned I was going to host G. Gordon’s show was go to PetSmart and get a rat to fry up,” Gill says. “They sell them there as snake food. I had it between two slices of bread. It didn’t taste like chicken.

“In his book, G. Gordon says that the meat is kind of stringy, and I’d have to agree with him on that. But then, I agree with him on about everything.”

Gill, whose Liddy subbing gig will continue through March 17, says that he plans to stop his Liddy emulation with rat eating.

“I don’t plan to do some of those other things G. Gordon has done, like commit burglaries or urge citizens to gun down federal employees,” Gill says with a chuckle. “I’m really proud to fill in for that guy. He’s quite a card.”
