Wait a minute. These Vanderbilt athletes are running in Centennial Park. Aren’t they worried about secondhand smoke? Shouldn’t they wait until the parks board comes to some final conclusions about smoking? Shouldn’t we all wring our hands and write our representatives and call in to talk radio and get all worked up about smoking rights? Folks are acting like they elected Karl Dean on an all-tobacco platform. Let’s all remind ourselves that we elected our new mayor because his No. 1 issue is education, and when Tennessee schools rank last in the nation in math and science, maybe it should be our only focus for a while. Let Metro Parks figure out which playgrounds to make nonsmoking. The rest of us can get back to working on education, because the biggest issue isn’t whether Johnny can breathe—it’s why Johnny can’t read.
