We headed downtown to see ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro at the Target World Music Festival last Thursday night. We realize “ukulele virtuoso” might sound like an oxymoron, but there is no other way to describe a guy who played “Ave Maria,” “In the Mood” and Zeppelin’s “Going to California” in the same set. Amazing. So we’re walking to the Schermerhorn when we happen across the Naked Cowboy and a mob of Fan Fair maidens. The Naked Cowboy is posing (including snarling, arching and clenching) for photos. He’s got banter: “Wait a minute, we’re having some testicle, I mean technical, difficulties.” We really like him and we’re strangely pleased that the Yo-Yo Ma of the ukulele and the Roy Rogers of tighty-whities can coexist downtown. So long as the object in the mirror on the back of his guitar is that chick’s forearm. Otherwise, we’re very concerned that cowpoke is gonna put some CMT festivalgoer’s eye out.
