While enjoying the unique character of our downtown the other night, we heard a street musician standing in front of Trail West singing a new version of the Schoolhouse Rock classic, “I’m Just a Bill.” The song was called “I’m Just a Buil-ding,” and it talked about all the stages for a building proposal on Lower Broad. It mentioned Rick Bernhardt (head of Metro Planning) and Ann Roberts (head of Metro Historical Commission) and Phil Ryan (head of MDHA) and how we can all (no crackpots, please) contact them with our concerns about sky plane variances and sightlines and historic preservation. That way, when a company like, say, Westin Hotels wants to make a valuable investment in our community, we’ve been engaged from the start and we’ll have a better chance of liking the result.
