Vanderbilt University theater students, under the direction of Jeffrey Ullom, are currently presenting dramablog, an original performance piece that melds the frank personal opining of Internet blogging with the quick-paced, call-and-response feel of improvisational acting.

In fact, the many individual scenes are mostly scripted beforehand, but the 10 cast members put energy, humor and feeling behind their words, and their takes on campus life, relationships and taboo subjects (religion, sex, politics) are meaningfully rendered, effectively reflecting their youthful concerns and POV.

“The goal was to be immediate and relevant,” Ullom says, “to let the students have a creative voice in the writing. There’s a lot of honesty in the material. As actors, the students are exploring how you go from being passive to jumping in with an immediate performance, and to use their space in an active way.”

The players are Jess Bergholtz, Jill Ginsberg, Margot Glickman, Sara Lackner, Elise Masur, Sarina Sahetya, Sarah Salter, Stephanie Sefcik, Alex Useted and Seth Wilson.
