One foggy Boston night, on her way to investigate a haunted house, a woman hears muffled sounds, maybe those of a murder. No body is found the next day, but detective Frank Devaney asks for the woman's help on an old case, in which he fears the wrong man was imprisoned. At first, these events seem unrelated, but they connect through a past that winds through a Victorian Boston betrayal, decades-old environmental misdeeds, and a series of contemporary murders.
In Now You See Her (Mysterious, 288 pages, $23.95), author Cecelia Tishy has created a likable new protagonist: 40-something Regina Cutter, who is making a new life for herself after her husband trades her in for a younger woman. Used to a life of furs and dinner parties, Regina must fend for herself, writing a weekly column, taking in a renterand discovering that she has psychic ability.
Regina is willing, even eager for the adventures this newly revealed quality offers. It takes her to the most elite and most deprived sections of Boston and puts her in danger along the way. Regina can be impulsive, but as a middle-aged woman she is also aware of the consequences of her actions. After encountering the prisoner she's trying to save, for example, Regina notes the seriousness of her psychic gift: "There's that certain moment when the light changes, a chill winds blows, and the season suddenly shifts. Or the makeup mirror shows a new facial line, and you're up a notch on life's cycle. This is one such instant. It's not just for fun but for keeps. It's not a hobby I can exit and leave to the pros. I'm too far in it for that."
Tishy, author of the Kate Banning novels set in Nashville as well as several nonfiction works, is an English professor at Vanderbilt. This novel starts a new series, and you don't have to be psychic to know there's a bright future for Regina Cutter and her investigations. Tishy will read at Borders Books on West End, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
