Kitchen-Sink BluesBy Edd HurtPublished on November 20, 2008 at 3:43amA hard-touring, blues-loving Londoner with a voice that suggests a rock version of Esther Phillips sardonic rasp, Bex Marshall writes concise songs and embellishes them with intelligent, folkish guitar. Her latest full-length, Kitchen Table, measures out its groove and plays like relaxed conversation, complete with jokes, asides and perfectly turned licks. Bad Bad Girl is a plainspoken tale of teenage rebellion that manages to sound sexy and nostalgic, while Hot Headed Man makes blues out of mandolin, banjo and violin. Released this spring in England, Kitchen Table was picked up by an American distributor after Marshall won over audiences at Memphis prestigious Folk Alliance earlier in the year. Shes a fine guitarist with a silken touch, as the sublime Black Guitar demonstrates.
