Sonor et Visio at TSUBy Amanda DillinghamPublished on October 09, 2008 at 3:42amIn the words of Flavor Flav, "Y'all cant copyright no beats. Austin Peay State University art professors Kell Black and Barry Jones--a.k.a. Black/Jones--have kept this quote in mind while creating their unique collaborative performance art through the use of editing existing and original audio and video. By pulling directly from society's influences, their work explores complicated cultural relationships, including media's correlation to language. Black/Jones' performance this Thursday is based on the theoretical writings of medieval monk Abbot Suger, whose model of "Luz Externa" helped to develop the art of stained glass. The live experimental composition will feature sound, images, projections and video and, like most performance art, rely largely on the audience. Besides Flavor Flav, Black/Jones cite Kara Walker, Brian Eno and composer and avant-garde artist John Cage as inspiration for the collage style employed to express our time.
