Never Been HomeBy Martin BradyPublished on September 25, 2008 at 3:43amThe finale piece of the Shades of Black Theatre Festival is yet another original play--and the second contributed by the busy Shawn Whitsell to the seven-week-long dramatic celebration of the African American experience. Whitsell also directs and performs in his study of a prominent upper-middle-class family, gathered for the funeral of its patriarch, a respected politician and businessman. The theme here is familiar and universal: raging family dysfunction hidden behind a picture-perfect public image. The cast includes some of the more experienced, up-and-coming actors in the black theater community, including Kamal Bolden, Rashad Rayford, Tamiko Robinson and festival co-producer Mary McCallum.
