Camp awesome
Saturday night, Murfreesboro played host to the sixth annual Southern Girls Rock 'n' Roll Camp showcase. By no means a pretentious affair, this event has proven itself to be the best night of music in the 'Boro each year. And it fucking ruled. Just to set things straight, this ain't a recital—it's a full-blown rock show. Pure badassery. For a low price and a good cause (proceeds go to the new nonprofit center, Youth Empowerment through Arts and Humanities), you get a night packed to the brim of awesome music from girls who've just learned to hold a guitar or a pair of drumsticks. And even though they had all of a week to form a band and learn the craft, 19 groups churned out originals, and only a few chose covers. The night's music ranged from a Pointer Sisters-style girl group (surprisingly not that common at the camp) to horror pop, to fantastic covers of The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" and Shiny Toy Guns' "Le Disko." These girls are the future of rock 'n' roll, and so many of the bands' frontwomen were naturally charismatic and fearless—shredding on guitars and rhythm sections and all around rattling some skulls. But mainly, the girls were clearly just ecstatic to be playing in front of such a large audience—even if it was mostly comprised of their parents.
