Joe Davidian Trio

By Jack Silverman

Published on July 23, 2008 at 3:41am

The latest installment in our favorite-named concert series, “Snap on 2 & 4”—a tongue-in-cheek instruction for the rhythmically challenged—features this recent Nashville arrival, a deeply talented pianist who maintains a delicate balance between forward thinking and jazz tradition. Schooled at University of Miami’s prestigious jazz program, Davidian has performed with Joe Lovano, Tito Puente and Kevin Mahogany, while his trio (including bassist Jamie Ousley and drummer Austin McMahon) has backed Dave Liebman, Carmen Lundy and Bob Mintzer, to name a few. On “Clouds and a Wedding,” from his recent Silent Fire, Davidian wanders from light, flowing melodies to moments of abstraction and even dissonance, giving listeners enough familiarity while venturing into more daring, uncharted territory. In between tour dates, including international festivals, Davidian will be teaching at Nashville Jazz Workshop, a coup for the school and the city’s music students.
