The concert included two other works. Composer William Schuman’s Credendum (An Article of Faith) is one of your typical mid-20th century American works. It’s full of widely spaced chords and intervals (suggesting, no doubt, the vast and open American landscape), bright orchestrations and off-kilter rhythms. Slatkin and NSO played this piece with genuine feeling, proving once again that this orchestra is at its best playing music of the American heartland. But they were also convincing in Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, playing this composer’s unforgettable melodies with just the right heart-on-your-sleeve emotion.
